RAZ KIDS READING PROGRAM
Triangle Elementary has subscribed to the online library of exciting reading materials. Raz-Kids helps students improve their reading skills as they listen to a book read for modeled fluency. Then, if the computer has a built-in record function, they can record themselves reading the same book. Or, students can read the book to themselves or aloud for practice. Interactive quizzes are available at the end of each book to check for understanding. It is not necessary for students to record themselves but if they have the capability at home that is always a great way to improve fluency.

Here is how to access the website and your child’s reading assignment from any computer connected to the Internet:

1. Go to www.raz-kids.com from your Internet browser and click the Log In tab .
2. Type in the teacher username and click  the green GO arrow.
3. Find your name on the chart and click on that.

The books in assigned to your child’s based on his or her independent reading level appear on his or her personal assignment page. Your child should choose to listen, read, and then take a quiz by clicking on the symbols below each book.

IXL MATH

Triangle Elementary is excited to provide all students with an IXL account. IXL is a comprehensive, SOL based math program that students can use at school AND at home! This is a wonderful way to support math instruction at home!!

Students can earn awards and parents can look at student progress reports. Please encourage your student to use IXL as often as possible. To access your account, go to Triangle’s homepage at  www.ixl.com/signin/triangle. There students can enter their username and password. If your learner is not sure of his/her login information please contact the homeroom teacher or Mrs. Adams at adamslj@pwcs.edu.

GIRL SMARTS
Registration is now open and limited to 40 girls in 4th and 5th grade for Girl Smarts 101. Girl Smarts is a series of after school workshops designed to give our young girls motivation, self-confidence and skill sets to move forward with strength in the years ahead. Our 101 session is open to any 4th or 5th grade girl who did not take part in Girl Smarts last year. We will have another session for those girls beginning in January. Please register now, as spots are limited.

You can go to www.girlsmarts.net for details on the program and follow on Facebook at Girl Smarts LLC. We look forward to supporting our girls as they continue to become "confident, capable, and in control". Please contact Mrs. Lathers for any further information.

FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION NOTIFICATION TO PARENTS

The parent letter/opt-out form is part of the PWCS student “Code of Behavior & Forms.” Objectives by grade level are posted on the Science and Family Life Education Web page  (choose the Family Life Education button). Parents should visit the site and review the objectives for their child’s grade level or course. Parents may exercise opt-out for any of the FLE sensitive content by returning the opt-out form to the appropriate teacher any time during the school year but preferably within the first month of school.

TRIANGLE ELEMENTARY NAMED 2012-2013 SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE
For the second year in a row, Triangle Elementary School has been named a PWCS "School of Excellence". Please click HERE to view the press release and a listing of all PWCS schools who achieved this status.

According to pwcs.edu: "Receiving a “School of Excellence” flag is a source of great pride for a school community in Prince William County. Schools attain this designation by demonstrating high levels of performance— they must be fully accredited by the state, meet Virginia academic Annual Measurable Objectives, and achieve an overall score of 90 out of 100 points on PWCS Strategic Plan-based measures. This year, 44 flags will be handed out at Schools of Excellence celebrations to mark this achievement.

Maintaining this designation is not an easy task. The finish line that marks success moves each year, ensuring that schools never rest with their last accomplishments. In all, 37 elementary schools, five middle schools, and both traditional schools are named Schools of Excellence this year based on 2012–13 data. The categories of criteria are the same as last year.
The School of Excellence distinction is the highest recognition awarded to a school by the Prince William County School Board."
